What Virus' are popping up locally?
What we're seeing in Southwestern Ontario!

W32.Novarg.A@mm

This Worm targets your address book once it's executed, sending itself to as many valid email address' as it can find.  They won't show up in your 'Sent Items' folder as it uses its own email engine to do the sending.

It then opens up a backdoor, leaving your system directly vulnerable to the creator, or anyone who does enough research into how the worm works.  From here it waits until February 1st, 2004.  Once this day comes, it starts attacking its intended victim, www.sco.com, causing a Denial of Service and keeps attacking until February 12th.

04.22.2002

W32.Klez.H@mm

This Worm is a variant of a previous one introduced in January.  It strikes through Outlook or Outlook Express, using a security vulnerability.  This vulnerability was addressed by Microsoft a while back, and should be patched if not done so already.

Outlook / Outlook Express Patch:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-020.asp

Once infected, the worm makes sure that it gets run every time the machine is restarted.  If your system is connected to a network, the worm searches out open shares and copies itself to them, in hopes that others will run it.  It also tries to disable your current virus protection software, preventing its detection.

To keep with its high infection rate, it searches all Windows address books and ICQ user lists and sends itself out to all that are found.

MyParty Virus

A slightly more crafty virus in its attachment is being spread through e-mail.  This virus arrives in your inbox with the following subject:

  new photos from my party!

The body of the message contains the following:

   Hello!

My party... It was absolutely amazing!
I have attached my web page with new photos!
If you can please make color prints of my photos. Thanks!

The attachment name is the rather sneaky part of this in that it takes on the look of a web site link:

   Attachment: www.myparty.yahoo.com

As this is a valid executable file, opening up the attachment will infect the system.
